(Provided by Institute of Public Affairs Management) The College of Management (CoM) at NSYSU established a strategic alliance with Laser Tek Taiwan Co., Ltd. Dean of CoM Professor San-Yih Hwang signed a letter of intent on strategic alliance and an agreement on internship for graduates with Chairman of Laser Tek Taiwan Gary Cheng. Dean Hwang also received a donation cheque of NTD 600,000 from the company to launch the Action Learning course at the Institute of Public Affairs Management (IPAM). This industry-academia collaboration aims at cultivating professionals aware of sustainability issues, increasing students’ opportunities to learn in practice about CSR, and encouraging students to plan a professional career in Kaohsiung after graduation.
The Financial Supervisory Commission published the Blueprint for Corporate Governance 3.0 on Sustainable Development, which puts emphasis on strengthening the role of the chairperson, improving information transparency, enhancing stakeholders’ communication, conforming with international regulations, and nurturing corporate governance and culture for sustainability. This proves that environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) has become an issue of concern. In recent years, the CoM incorporated social responsibility into its core development strategy. This year, CoM connected USR (University Social Responsibility) with CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) to achieve three annual targets: cooperative empowerment and extension services at NSYSU, assistance for CSR projects, and launching CSR co-learning group courses. Professor Hwang pointed out that the collaboration with Laser Tek Taiwan can bring mutual benefits: besides helping companies come up with more innovative CSR projects, it will provide more opportunities for the students and local companies to get to know each other and enhance students’ academic and practical abilities.
This collaboration was modelled after the “Writing of Corporate Social Responsibility Reports” course at IPAM. The Deputy Dean of COM Professor Jui-Kun Kuo and Edison Wang, a lecturer from a consulting company – Leadership (領導力企業管理顧問公司), provided guidance for the students to understand the CSR actions of Laser Tek Taiwan. The collaboration also included a workshop with group discussions on CSR and UN Sustainable Development Goals. Being able to exchange with the students, the company’s employees could see the CSR features of Laser Tek Taiwan from a different perspective. For the participating students, being able to meet front-line employees and learn about the details of CSR and the compilation process of CSR reports directly from them was a great opportunity to enhance their practical abilities.
Chairman of Laser Tek Taiwan Gary Cheng emphasized that he is happy to have established long-term collaboration with NSYSU College of Management and that Laser Tek Taiwan is also willing to provide internship opportunities to create a platform for nurturing professionals aware of sustainability issues; both parties will follow the trend of sustainable governance to create a better future.
Students and teachers of the “Writing of Corporate Social Responsibility Reports” course with the cadre of Laser Tek Taiwan
Wen-Chien Yang, a participating student of the Institute of Public Affairs Management, shared her experience, saying that the teaching style of the collaboration project was much more lively than regular classes and that she had an opportunity to voice what she learned in class, which will enrich her CV. Now I have overcome my stereotypes about local companies and want to establish a closer connection with Laser Tek Taiwan, she said.
